Latvia: Lenny Kravitz performs
live in Riga, Latvia

Anete Andermane, Expats Latvia

12.07.2005 09:22
On Sunday,
10th July 2005, the world-famous rock musician Lenny Kravitz
gave an astonishing concert at the Skonto Hall in the capital of
Latvia- Riga. 8 pm was the official concert start with the
appreciated Latvian rock band R.A.P. as an opening but numerous
fans were starting to gather already by 6 pm at the entrance of
the venue. The regret of standing in a queque and waiting for
the beginning of the show was exclusively rewarded by the
excellent opportunity to see one of the greatest contemporary
rock stars performing live. The aforementioned number of
attendants was around 6000.
Before the entrance of Lenny Kravitz,
R.A.P. performed a number of their songs in Latvian and English
that ranged from complete novelties of their next expected album
to surpassing hits like “Butterfly Snow Fall” and “Nekas Vairs
Nav Tā” receiving a great response from the public.
But nothing could overpower the
ovations that bursted when a couple of minutes past 9 pm the
curtain fell again and the rock star Lenny Kravitz himself
appeared on the stage with an acompanying band of 10 musicians
and begun the concert with the composition “Minister of Rock N
Roll” from his 7th and newest album “Baptism’ released in 2004.
The album was not only written but also arranged and produced by
Lenny Kravitz himself. Who, besides vocals, performed also the
parties for guitar, bass guitar, piano and even drums.
The concert of the celebrity in Riga,
Latvia was in the framework of his concert tour “Electrical
Church”, and in this context it contained a lot of “electric”
and ‘spiritual” energy in the air, indeed. The venue of Skonto
Hall was literally stuffed with people all excited to hear in
live performance such awarded hits like “Dig In’, “American
Woman”, ‘Fly Away”, “Again” and “Where Are We Runnin” side by
side with exclusively new and promising songs of the latest
album “Baptism”. The concert was the hottest event ever lately,
indeed, in both- a figurative sense and literally as the
temperature at the Skonto Hall definetely passed 30 degrees
Celsius, the lack of oxygen was close to vacuum and it is really
difficult to decide whether it was a disadvantage of the
organizers of the concert- “Premier Show”-, or an advantage to
the concert contributing to the overall excitement and
uniqueness of the atmosphere where a multitude of sreaming and
fainting fans (just like it was once typical for The Beatles)
has become a reality in Kravitz’s concert in Latvia too.
However, the temperature and the lack of air did not seem to
affect the quality of Kravitz’s performance: the sound, the
voice, the instrumental solos were truly outstanding, the rock
star contributed all his energy, talent and charm in to the
performance and even stepped down from the stage and shook hands
with the first row of public raising the greatest excitement
that could ever be expected.
After performing “Fly Away’ Kravitz
and his acompanying musicians said goodbye to the Latvian
public, and, after a pause and the Skonto Hall echoing with
applause and enthusiastic fan squalls, the musician returned to
perform two more songs- “Lady” and “Again”. At this point he
introduced the public once more with his accompanying musicians,
where the musical yield and the energy of Kravitz’s drummer
Cindy Blackman was particularly rewarded with breathtaking
applause from the public. After that Kravitz expressed a hope to
see the Latvian public “real soon again’. The musicians left to
return once more and perform the last song “Are You Gonna Go My
Way”. Lenny Kravitz concluded the concert with long, sincere and
heartfelt bows leaving the Latvian public with the most
gratifying memories of the wonderful show that will most likely
be indelible for years to come. The whole concert lasted more
than two hours until approximately 11:30 pm and it can be stated
for sure that, side by side with concerts of Moby, Rammstein,
Depeche Mode and The White Stripes recently, the Kravitz’s
“Electric Church” tour is one of the greatest foreign music
shows that the Latvian stage has ever experienced.
Lenny Kravitz released his debut album
in 1989, and in his concert in Riga he expressed his emotions
regarding this fact with the sentence “After 16 years we finally
made it!”. Before the “Baptism” album the praised musician had
also recorded a compilation “Greatest Hits” which is a
marvellous sum-up of his so forth career as one of the leading
and most charismatic icons of contemporary music. Kravitz’s
singles and albums have reached gold, platinum as well as multi-
platinum status numerous times, he has been the receiver of
Grammy Awards MTW Video Music Awards and also American Music
Awards. His fifth Grammy nomination was in 2003 for his single
“If I Could Fall In Love”. A multitude of his fans worldwide
cherish his most prize winning and awarded singles such as “Dig
In”, “American Woman” and “Fly Away”.
The next concert venue of the tour
“Electrical Church” in Europe is Dresden in Germany on 13th July
2005, followed by concerts in Austria, Switzerland, France, and
the United Kingdom.
